Visitor Information

Northern Territory Correctional Services endeavours to try and make visits by families and friends to the person in prison an experience which is not intimidating and stressful for all concerned.

It is a difficult time and NTCS would like to make the experience as normal as possible especially for the children who come to visit their parent.

Beautification of the Visits Centre

The Alice Springs Correctional Centre visits area was a grey courtyard scattered with concrete tables and some vegetation to soften the fenced-in area. The goal was to transform the dull concrete covered courtyard into a colour filled interactive family friendly area.

Danny Measures, Sport and Recretation Officer and the then Education's Art Tutor Sila Croxley organised and supervised the program which provided women prisoners with an opportunity to get out of their blocks and do something productive.

The group came up with neutral concepts that were child friendly, interactive, colourful and bold. The group decided against solely traditional painting where only the artist with the permission can paint the story; this meant that everyone had input and could help with the painting.

Each table carries its own theme ranging from football to Yamba, flowers, cartoons and a road map for the children to play on with toy cars. Giant alphabet and number snakes slither to the centre of the courtyard, a colourful hopscotch and a painted fish pond cover the ground.

The project has provided the women prisoners with an opportunity to plan and implement their ideas into something tangible that will provide a pleasant atmostphere for visitors to the prison.
